Pew Sheet: Week Commencing 30th June

St Matthew's Mothers' Union Tuesday 10th June 2024 
As always, we began with our short act of worship led by Sue and a reading by Ann. Our speaker for the evening was Lesley Walker, who although a poet, said she thought herself as a story teller. All her poems came about by unusual events she came across.
The first came from her class. She was teaching English to ‘O’ level students who had to wright poetry as part of the exam. They said, "if it is so easy Miss, why don't you write one?" So of course she had to. From then on she began to write more, and eventually she had the poems published in a book dedicated to The Dovedale Singers, a group she belongs to, who always laugh in the right places. The proceeds from the book go&nbsp;to Soroptimist International&nbsp;via their branch in Ashton-Under-Lyne.
She read many of her poems and told us the stories behind them. They were all very interesting, some thought provoking, but many very funny. I am sure she was a wonderful English teacher.
Mavis thanked her, on behalf of all the members, for a very interesting talk. Our next meeting will be on the 9th July.

Mothers' Union Meeting Report: 10th June

As Petertide approaches, we are thinking about and praying for&nbsp;all those due to be ordained, but&nbsp;particularly&nbsp;Hannah Currin who is&nbsp;a member of our church family. Pew Sheet: Week Commencing 23rd June

As usual we began with our short service, taken this month by Val, with a reading by Gwen.Our speaker was our choir master Mr Garry Johnson.He had organised a quiz, "Name That Tune". This sounded quite easy as we all thought we would at least know the hymns, but&nbsp;it’s surprising how difficult it can be! We had lots of fun and I think everyone enjoyed the evening. We finished &nbsp;by singing a favourite hymn, and Garry explained how he got into music and how much it still means to him. The meeting closed at 9 pm.Margaret Lees
