Reverend Luke Whiteman has been appointed to be our new Vicar at St Swithun's with St Luke's and we look forward to welcoming him and his family to the Parish. His induction when he will be licensed by The Bishop will be on Monday 9th September and in the meantime please read his message to us all:

“Hello, my name is Luke! I am so excited to serve as your vicar, as you enter the next chapter of your amazing history. I thought you might want to know a little about me.
 
&nbsp;
 
I am married to Emma, who is a civil servant. We have two young sons, who will be hard to miss on Sunday mornings as they’re both very chatty and active! Emma and I are really looking forward to putting down roots in East Grinstead and raising our boys here.
 
&nbsp;
 
I grew up in Eastbourne, studied in Norwich and worked as a chartered accountant for 10 years before training for ministry in South London. I led a small church in Clapham alongside my ordination training at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford and then joined Christ Church Gipsy Hill, where I worked as curate and then led the church through their vacancy. As a church leader my passions are speaking about God’s Word, mission and building communities of joy.

Psalm 16 talks about how in God’s presence we find the fullness of joy, and to me the bedrock of a good church is joy. Church should be a place where you come as you are to relieve burdens or to celebrate good times, and where you come into the presence of God through meeting the person in the pew next to you. I will be praying that you know the joy of Jesus in your midst over these coming months.”

New Vicar for St Swithun's

Last October we were thrilled to be invited to join the members of the East Grinstead Community Bonfire and Mayor Fraser Visser to lead a short service at the war memorial before the torch lit procession. The service included a minute's silence as an Act of Remembrance and it was an honour to be a part of the event.The money raised from the street collection was donated to the Greenaway Foundation and Jigsaw SE, as well as a donation to our own church to say thank you for our support. We would like to thank the chairman of the East Grinstead Community Bonfire, Graham Jones, for his kind donation to St Swithun's PCC.
Plans are already underway for an even bigger and better event this year, so make sure you add the Saturday 19th October to your calendars!

The fundraising elves at St Luke's were out in force last Friday for a tea party in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.
 
Over sixty people came for a fun afternoon and helped raised an amazing £431.91 to help those suffering from this cruel disease.
 Many thanks to all those who supported us with donations, raffle prizes and help on the day.

Fundraising fun at St Luke's

This is an annual opportunity for churches, businesses, charities, and individuals to consider afresh what they can do to eliminate modern slavery in their communities. 50 million people are estimated to be trapped in some form of modern slavery in the world today and it is estimated that there are over 136,000 victims in the UK. Slavery really is on our doorstep, and raising awareness of this within our own communities is so important. One place that modern slavery is persistent is in hand car washes, and you can help identify and report such places by downloading a very simple app, that asks a series of questions about the site, and then invites users to send a report if the answers highlight potential exploitation. Many sites are legitimate businesses, but it guides us to be more responsible and mindful of the many ways people are exploited around us. <a href="https://theclewerinitiative.org/campaigns/safe-car-wash">https://theclewerinitiative.org/campaigns/safe-car-wash</a>. 
Do take the time to read more about Modern Slavery with The Clewer Initiative who have designed this app. Their logo is 'We See You'. Let's make sure we do see what is going on a little more in our own communities and make a difference.
